Executive Summary
Unity Place is a speculative masterplanning project that explores how architecture can support stronger communities whilst responding to the environmental and social challenges facing contemporary towns. Situated on a brownfield site in Walsall, the proposal reimagines underutilised land as a mixed-use, low-carbon neighbourhood centred on people, wellbeing, and connection.
The project was informed by detailed analysis of local policy, environmental conditions, demographic data, and community needs. Drawing on principles of healthy placemaking, the design prioritises walkability, access to nature, social interaction, and climate resilience, creating an environment that promotes both physical and mental wellbeing.
The masterplan combines mixed-tenure housing, community facilities, small-scale commercial space, extensive green infrastructure, and sustainable construction methods to create a place that is environmentally responsible, socially inclusive, and economically resilient. Throughout the project, emphasis is placed on strengthening community connections, reducing car dependency, enhancing biodiversity, and creating opportunities for long-term stewardship.
Unity Place reflects my broader architectural interests in adaptive reuse, sustainable development, and community-centred design. It explores how thoughtful intervention can create places that not only respond to contemporary challenges but also foster a lasting sense of belonging and identity.
